Former council member responsible for controversial PAC mailing

Cam Hill to file report tomorrow

November 3, 2009
City Editor

A State Board of Elections investigation revealed that Cam Hill, a former Town Council member, was responsible for a mailer by an unregistered political action committee that framed mayoral candidate Matt Czajkowski negatively.

After candidate Mark Kleinschmidt denied sending out the mailer, complaints were filed with the State Board of Elections office, Campaign Finance Compliance Specialist Amy Strange said.

Read the two complaints filed by Kendall Law and Jim White.

Though the flier came from an unregistered political action committee, it is not illegal, Strange said. Hill has 10 days from the start of his PAC action to register it. The tenth day is Wednesday, Strange said.

Hill lost in a 2007 election to Czajkowski by 60 votes.

The flier said Czajkowski had "no accomplishments to point to."

Cry Baby

Cam Hill is incorrect, Matt does have an accomplishment to point to - he beat incumbent Hill in the last election. Hill's a cry baby using questionable tactics to circumvent election rules.

Knows better

Cam has been around politics long enough to know there would be outrage over this mailer. The fact that he was also an elected official makes this especially despicable in my eyes.

?

A flyer negatively framing a candidate for public office? We used to call this kind of thing free speech.

Not a former candidate

Cam is not a former CANDIDATE, he's a former ELECTED OFFICIAL. He was an incumbent Town Council member who ran a low-key re-election campaign in 2007 when Matt C spent over $20,000 and beat him by about 60 votes.

Not that it excuses this petulant campaign tactic, but it's relevant to note that he's not just a jealous also-ran. He's a Chapel Hill native and former elected official, who knows a thing or two about the issues, and about campaign laws.
