University researchers have found that obesity can inhibit the body’s ability to develop immunity against influenza viruses.

The study’s results, which were printed in the Monday issue of The Journal of Immunology, showed that obesity can detract from the body’s ability to “remember” how it did away with prior episodes with the illness.

Fifty years ago, a group of students gathered together to fight social injustice as part of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.

Alice Ammerman is the type of person who cooks cabbage for school fundraisers.

She’s done it often enough that she says she has a personal relationship with some local farmers.

“I would go to the market and the farmer would go home and say she was surprised some woman bought a case of cabbage for a fundraiser,” Ammerman said.

The meaning of love isn’t an easy topic to understand.

But professor Susan Wolf gave it a shot Monday night in the first of three lectures on the definition and value of love.

“If you love someone, you have a stake in the world,” she said.

Interim provost Bruce Carney did not apply for the provost position but was selected on Wednesday.

There’s nothing new about UNC’s new executive vice chancellor and provost.

Chancellor Holden Thorp announced Wednesday that Bruce Carney, who serves as interim provost this year, will assume the job permanently pending approval by the Board of Trustees next week.

Weight and risk for diabetes decreased for participants in communities where fast food prices increased, a UNC study shows.

The study also showed the reverse: When fast food prices went down, consumption, weight and diabetes risk increased.

Wilmington-based research organization PPD Inc. donated $25,000 to the Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Data Coordination and Analysis Center at UNC.

The center will use the donation to develop a data management system for a consolidated database for six pediatric multiple sclerosis centers across the country.

It’s because of the way she lived and the way she was killed that Eve Carson’s name is accompanied by a gut reaction.

But in a couple of years, all the students who can remember the former student body president’s voice, presence and friendship on campus will have graduated.

Friends embraced. Some cried. Others in the crowd of more than 100 stood in silence. Everyone remembered.

A new study by UNC researchers has found that young children in the U.S. are now consuming a large portion of their diets through snacking on salty chips, candy and other junk food.

Snacking now comprises up to 27 percent of children’s daily calories, the study found. It was published in the March issue of the Health Affairs journal.

UNC’s Information Technology Services has planned a major emergency outage for March 13 to conduct “critical maintenance” on its data center.

The outage will last from 4 p.m. March 13 until 8 a.m. March 14, for a total of 16 hours.

Services that will be affected include UNC e-mail, Connect Carolina, Finance Central, Student Central and others.

The UNC chapter of the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program inducted its first scholars at the Stone Center on Thursday evening.

The program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, is intended to provide assistance to students from underrepresented backgrounds, low-income families and to first-generation college students, said Joseph Green, director of Upward Bound, who brought the nationwide program to UNC.

Move over, Cancun — Honduras is the new tropical destination for students on spring break.

But they won’t be spending all their time soaking up the sun and slurping drinks with umbrellas.

Several University service groups are hosting trips to Honduras during the break to help medicate, nourish and clothe the people of this impoverished nation.

And Honduras needs their help — the country was devastated in 1998 by Hurricane Mitch and is considered the second-poorest country in Central America, after Haiti.

Professor Barry Margolin was remembered fondly in a memorial service Wednesday afternoon, more than a year after his death, at the Gillings School of Global Public Health. These words were the common thread that connected the stories people shared.

The Carolina Union Activities Board will be accepting applications for positions on the 2010-11 school year until 5 p.m. March 24.

All applicants, whether undergraduate, graduate or professional students, must be enrolled in the 2010-11 school year to apply.

The board is looking for people interesting in planning, designing, promoting and organizing events.

The protest corresponds with the National Day of Action to Defend Education, a series of rallies and other protest activities occurring across the country today.

As the sun set on Rams Head Plaza on Wednesday, students wandering into its recreation center were met on the other side of the gym’s glass doors by the sights and sounds of March madness.

The squeaks of shoes, the shouts of men and the rhythmic thuds of the basketballs echoed against every corner of the gym’s beige brick walls.

Former Student Body President Eve Carson inspired the garden.

“Learn from every single being, experience, and moment. What joy it is to search for lessons and goodness and enthusiasm in others.”

Those words were written by former Student Body President Eve Carson in a letter to a graduating friend. They have now been carved into a marble wall, one of several items to be unveiled at 4 p.m. today during the dedication of the Eve Marie Carson Garden.

If a new bill passes Student Congress, students might have witnessed in February the last student body president runoff in UNC history.

Members of the rules and judiciary committee are tweaking legislation that could change the way students elect the person who serves as their representative to the administration and the voice of the student body.

One year ago, Jason Cummings found no need to stand outside the Dean Dome to scalp basketball tickets.

“Last year, I’d sell them all in advance,” said the 38-year-old Chapel Hill resident.

But with the team near a .500 record, Cummings has been forced to show up because fans believe the Tar Heels aren’t.

A new study released by scientists at UNC shows signs that obese 3-year-olds can show a sign of future heart disease.

Researchers found that children as young as 3 years old may have high levels of C-reactive protein, a sign in adults that can predict heart disease.

Two delegations traveling to Rwanda this summer are seeking members to serve on their teams.

Both delegations hope to bring groups of about 15 people on the trips, which will engage in volunteer work, field research, workshops and human rights advocacy.
